African Development Trust Shortlist for 2018 African Writers Award has been released

A short-list for the 2018 African Writers Award  by African Writers Development Trust (AWD) has been released.The award categories  are Short stories,Flash fiction  and Poetry.The short-list on Short-stories,Flash fiction and Poetry has 10 names,while children’s literature has 5 names .Releasing the short list,the African Writers Award noted that there were  few entries for children’s literature compared to the other genres.

‘This shows that there is a dearth of Children’s literature writers from Africa. Perhaps, it is worth considering’ said  Nahida Esmail, Tanzania

Below are the shortlisted entries and their authors

Children’s literature: 

  1. Onyekachi Eberechi Grace (Nigeria) for ‘Freedom Is at the Bank of the River.’
  2. Manu Herbstein  (Ghana) for ‘Roise-Awa.’
  3. Maryam Awaisu (Nigeria) for ‘Ms Joana’s Rules.’
  4. Jo Allen (Kenya) for ‘Who Can Stop the Rain.’
  5. Anierobi Ginikachi Maria (Nigeria) for ‘Destined for Greatness.’

Short Stories

  1. Nana Ama Gyemaah Otuahene (Ghana) for ‘The merchandise.’
  2. Temwai Mgundu (Malawi) for ‘A Dance in the Dark.’
  3. Odinegwa Onmwamere (Nigeria) for ‘My Mother’s 4th pregnancy.’
  4. Musak Worneh (Ethiopia) for ‘Anathema.’
  5. Munira Hessein (Kenya) for ‘The power of the Wind.’
  6. Philani Amadeas Nyoni (Zimbabwe) for ‘Celestial Incest.’
  7. Aisha M. Umar (Nigeria) for ‘Binle’s Emerald. ‘
  8. Ben Mugo (Kenya) for ‘Dawn.’
  9. Mazabu Mwanga (Zambia) for ‘Till Death.’
  10. Mema Daisy Ojukwu (Nigeria) for ‘A Woman Now.’

The winners will be  announced and awarded  during the 2018 African Writers Award Dinner  at the International Conference Centre, Abuja at 5:30 PM.
